Maelor Foods Ltd is the UK’s premier state of the art purpose-built poultry slaughtering facility based in Wrexham, North Wales processing British Red Tractor birds using the most innovative process methods.
Maelor Foods Ltd is the sister company to Salisbury Poultry (Midlands) Ltd which was established in 1989. During its 30 years of operation, Salisbury Poultry has gained an enviable reputation in the processing and deboning of chicken.
Maelor Foods now compliments Salisbury Poultry offering a complete ‘Farm to Fork’ journey. Now in its second year of operation, Maelor Foods has built a core team to operate to the highest standards in the industry.
Due to Salisbury’s continuing success Raj Mehta, Manager Director purchased the 43 acre site at Cross Lanes, Wrexham and Maelor Foods Ltd was formed in 2014.
In 2015 permission was granted for a processing facility. The site required extensive rebuild and refurbishment works including a multi-million pound extension to house the state of the art processing facility.
Once the building work had been completed the most advanced systems were installed by Baader Linco and Marel Poultry, setting new standards within the industry.
In 2016, Maelor with a small team of employees began a deboning operation that was granted FSA and BRC approval.
The main refurbishment of the site was completed in 2017. Works included a complete indoor lairage with a lorry unload wash/load system, enclosed offal area and a high standard processing environment.
The site has been designed with sustainability and its impact on the surrounding environment in mind. The operation of the plant is energy efficient and we have maximised the latest efficiencies with the workflow of the production lines. Investment has taken place in a state of the art effluent treatment plant which allows 40% of the water usage to be recycled for further use. This has produced a comfortable working environment for both our workforce and our visitors.
November 2017 saw Maelor commence their operation producing A grade quality chickens for Salisbury Poultry. The Company achieved BRC AA grade, the highest grading of an industry recognized certification. The site also became Red Tractor approved ensuring it adhered to the stringent production standards including animal welfare.
Going forward, Maelor Foods aims to gain further accreditations and increase its processing numbers to 1 million chickens a week.
Maelor Foods has recognized the importance of integration with the community. A state-of-the-art air handling system has been installed, capable of controlling any odours. Plans have been submitted to absorb the existing transport site in order to reduce potential future vehicle movements and improvements are planned to the local road network.
