As part of the next phase in the Maelor journey, we have been actively working on reducing our environmental impact. This includes initiatives to reduce noise and odour for our neighbours and exploring sustainable energy projects. In March 2024, we created the position of Environmental Officer to focus on these important issues.

At Maelor Foods Ltd, we are dedicated to fostering sustainability and minimizing our environmental impact. Below are some key initiatives we have undertaken and are currently working on:

  • Recycling and Waste Reduction: We are committed to improving our recycling rate and reducing landfill usage with the goal of achieving zero landfill as part of our sustainability plan. In 2023 alone, we saved 90.8 trees, prevented 25 tonnes of CO2 emissions, and generated 28.7 MWh of electricity from waste. Our innovative partnerships ensure that even non-recyclable materials find new purposes.
  • Net Zero Emissions by 2050: Maelor Foods Ltd is committed to Science-Based Targets and is on a path to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. As a proud participant in the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), we undergo regular audits to optimize our energy usage. We care about our environment and our emissions, which is why we keep investing in environment-friendly changes. We have already switched to electric FLTs as part of our commitment to Net Zero. We have also started conducting feasibility studies on switching our energy source to renewable options and moving our transport fleet to be more environmentally friendly.
  • Emissions Reduction: Maelor Foods has joined Manufacture 2030 this year and is dedicated to cutting Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 50% by 2030. The M2030 platform will be key in helping Maelor Foods set and achieve its carbon reduction targets.
  • Innovative Waste Management: Maelor Foods has planned a groundbreaking initiative to transform its slurry/sludge waste stream into biogas and bio-solids. By partnering with industry leaders, the company aims to enhance sustainability and contribute to a net-zero future. This innovative approach not only generates renewable energy but also promotes an environmentally friendly waste management system.
  • Local Habitat Protection: We prioritise safeguarding local habitats and sensitive ecosystems, ensuring our operations do not adversely affect our neighbours or the environment. We maintain an open dialogue with nearby residents, regularly seeking feedback and addressing any concerns related to noise and odour. This proactive approach has fostered a positive relationship with our community.
  • Continuous Improvement: We set effective objectives, measures, and targets for environmental improvement, and we continuously monitor and review our performance against these benchmarks.

At Maelor Foods, we are passionate about the environment and committed to making positive, sustainable changes. Our ultimate goal is to grow together to be the best sustainable chicken processor. Join us on our journey towards a greener future.
